Ranthambore at a glance
Ranthambore National Park sits where the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges meet, near the town of Sawai Madhopur. It became a tiger reserve in 1973 under Project Tiger. The landscape is dry deciduous forest with lakes and grassland, and the ruins of Ranthambore Fort, a UNESCO-listed hill fort dating from around the 10th century, rise inside the park.
Tigers here are known for being relatively easy to see, sometimes in daylight and from open vehicles. That said, a sighting is never guaranteed, and many visitors need two or more safaris. Plan at least two nights so you can do several drives.
There are no hotels inside the park; everything is in and around Sawai Madhopur, a short drive from the entrance gates. Safari bookings are made online through the official Rajasthan forest department portal, and it's worth booking as early as possible for peak months.
Best time to visit Ranthambore
The core safari zones open on 1 October and close in early July. Many wildlife photographers prefer April to June, when the heat forces animals to waterholes, but temperatures are extreme. November to March is more comfortable but colder on safari mornings.
| Months | Weather | What it means for a trip |
|---|---|---|
| Oct – Nov | Warm days, pleasant mornings | Lush after the monsoon; animals are more spread out. |
| Dec – Feb | Cool days, cold mornings that can approach 5°C in open vehicles | Comfortable in the day, but pack warm layers, gloves and a scarf for the drive. |
| Mar – Apr | Warming, from 30°C to 40°C | Good for sightings as water sources shrink. |
| May – Jun | Very hot, often 42 to 46°C | Best for sightings, since tigers concentrate near water, but demanding in the heat. |
| Jul – Sep | Monsoon | Core zones 1 to 5 are usually closed. Some outer zones may stay open; check the current rules. |

Practical tips
- Book safaris as far ahead as the portal allows if you're travelling from December to March.
- Zone allocation happens by draw on the day, so the resort can't guarantee a specific zone.
- Carry photo ID for every traveller. It's required at check-in for the safari.
- Bring layers. Open vehicles are cold from November to February.
- Follow the guide's instructions and keep noise down; tigers are wild animals and sightings can't be promised.
