Bundi at a glance
Bundi is a small town in south-east Rajasthan built into a cleft in the hills, with a fort at the top, a palace on the slope and a lake below. It was the capital of the Hada Rajputs and gave its name to the Bundi school of miniature painting, whose wall murals survive in the palace.
The town has around 50 step wells scattered across it, and many old houses are painted blue. It is a slower and cheaper stop than the big cities, and sees a fraction of their visitors. That's the appeal: you can walk everywhere, and people in the lanes are unhurried.
Most travellers come for one night on the way between Jaipur, Chittorgarh and Udaipur, or as an add-on to Ranthambore. Two nights lets you see the sights without a rush.
Best time to visit Bundi
October to March is the comfortable season. The monsoon is beautiful, with waterfalls and green hills, but roads and climbs can be slippery.

| Jul – Sep | Humid with monsoon rain | Waterfalls and lakes fill up. Fort paths can be slippery, and some sights may be closed. |

Things to do in Bundi
1.Bundi Palace (Garh Palace)
A large palace on the hillside, partly ruined and partly restored, known for its painted rooms. The Chitrashala, an 18th-century gallery with murals in the Bundi school, is the highlight. The steep ramps at the entrance were built to prevent elephant charges.
Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours·Tip: Bring a torch or phone light for some dim rooms, and check whether the Chitrashala is open on the day you visit.
2.Taragarh Fort
A 16th-century hill fort above the palace, reached by a steep climb or a drive. Much of it is ruined, but the ramparts and views over the town and the surrounding hills are the reason to go.
Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
3.Raniji ki Baori
A step well built in 1699 by a queen of Bundi, about 46 metres deep with carved pillars and a series of decorated arches. One of the finest in Rajasthan.
Time needed: 30 minutes
4.Other step wells
Bundi has dozens of stepwells. Nagar Sagar Kund and Dhabhai Kund are among the largest, and a few are worth a short stop between other sights.
Time needed: 30 to 60 minutes
5.Nawal Sagar Lake
A large, square lake at the foot of the palace, with a half-submerged temple to Varuna. It is a pleasant place for an evening walk.
Time needed: 30 to 45 minutes
6.Sukh Mahal
A small summer palace on the edge of Jait Sagar, where Rudyard Kipling is said to have stayed. It's more of a photograph than a visit.
Time needed: 20 minutes
7.Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri
A cenotaph with 84 pillars, built in the 17th century on the edge of town. Quiet, and a nice place to end the day.
Time needed: 30 minutes
8.Bhimlat and Ramgarh Vishdhari
Bhimlat is a waterfall that runs in the monsoon, and Ramgarh Vishdhari is a wildlife sanctuary about 50 km to the north-east. Both are best in and just after the monsoon.
