Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur at a glance
Kumbhalgarh Fort was built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century in the Aravalli hills and is known for its perimeter wall, said to run for about 36 km. The wall is wide enough for several horses to ride side by side and follows the ridge lines around the fort. The fort is part of the UNESCO Hill Forts of Rajasthan group, and Maharana Pratap, Mewar's most celebrated ruler, was born here.
Ranakpur, about 50 km away, has one of India's largest Jain temple complexes, built in the 15th century in white marble. Together the two make a full-day trip from Udaipur, or a natural break on the road between Udaipur and Jodhpur.
There is no railway at Kumbhalgarh. Most visitors come by car with a driver, either as a day trip or as part of an overnight stay in one of the hill resorts around Kelwara village.
