Bharatpur at a glance
Bharatpur is a small city on the Agra–Jaipur route, and its main draw is Keoladeo National Park, a wetland reserve of about 29 square kilometres. It began as a royal duck-shooting preserve and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Ramsar wetland. More than 350 bird species have been recorded, and thousands of migratory birds arrive in winter.
No motor vehicles are allowed inside. You explore by cycle, on foot or by cycle rickshaw with a trained naturalist-driver, along flat paths that run between channels, marshes and woodland. It is a calm, slow way to spend a few hours.
Bharatpur is usually done as a half day or overnight stop on the way between Agra and Jaipur, or between Delhi and Ranthambore. It also has a fort, Lohagarh, and a water palace at Deeg, about 35 km away.
Best time to visit Bharatpur
November to February is the best time for birds, as migrants have arrived and the weather is cool. The monsoon brings resident water birds breeding, but heat and humidity are heavy.

| Oct – Nov | Warm days, cool nights | Migratory birds begin to arrive; the park fills up over the following weeks. |
| Dec – Feb | Cool days of 18 to 25°C, cold mornings | Peak for birds. Mornings are cold and often foggy; wear layers. |
| Mar – Apr | Warming | Migrants leave. Still good for resident species. |
| May – Jun | Very hot, over 40°C | Not recommended. |
| Jul – Sep | Monsoon | The wetlands fill up and resident storks and herons nest. Hot, humid and buggy. |
