Jodhpur at a glance
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, ruler of the Rathore clan, and served as the capital of the Marwar kingdom. Mehrangarh, the fort he built on a rocky ridge, still dominates the skyline, and the old city spreads out below it in a tangle of lanes, many of them painted in shades of blue.
It is a working city rather than a museum. The old town around Sardar Market and the clock tower is loud and busy, while the fort itself is one of the best-run and best-presented in Rajasthan. Most visitors give it a day and a night, but a second day makes sense if you want to see the countryside villages or the Umaid Bhawan Palace museum at a relaxed pace.
Jodhpur sits between Jaipur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer, which makes it a natural hinge in a Rajasthan circuit. Roads out to all three are good.
Best time to visit Jodhpur
October to March is the comfortable season. Summer is hard work here: the city is dry and can reach the low forties before the monsoon.
| Months | Weather | What it means for a trip |
|---|---|---|
| Oct – Nov | Warm days of 28 to 34°C, pleasant evenings | A good time for the fort. The Rajasthan International Folk Festival and the Marwar Festival are held around the full moon in October. |
| Dec – Feb | Days of 22 to 28°C, nights down to about 8 to 10°C | Best weather and the busiest hotels. Mornings can be cool on the fort ramparts. |
| Mar | Warm and dry, up to 35°C by the end of the month | Still pleasant early in the month. Head out early in the day. |
| Apr – Jun | Hot and dry, 40 to 45°C | Plan the fort for opening time and stay indoors in the afternoon. |
| Jul – Sep | Warm with some monsoon rain and humidity | Less rain than most of India. Quiet and inexpensive, with occasional hot, sticky spells. |
How to reach Jodhpur

- Jaipur is about 335 km, Udaipur about 260 km, Jaisalmer about 285 to 300 km, Pushkar and Ajmer about 190 km, and Delhi about 600 km. Roads are good; most Rajasthan circuits run by car with a driver.
Things to do in Jodhpur
1.Mehrangarh Fort
The main reason to come. The museum inside is well curated, with palanquins, weapons, painted rooms and courtyards, and the ramparts give a view across the old city. A lift takes you to the upper levels if you don't want the climb, and the audio guide, included for international visitors, is worth using.
Time needed: 3 to 4 hours·Tip: Go at opening (9 am). Tickets can be bought online, and entry is free on Jodhpur Foundation Day, 12 May, with only the lift charged.
2.Jaswant Thada
A white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, built in 1899, in a quiet setting beside a small lake. It is a short downhill walk from the fort.
Time needed: 30 to 45 minutes
3.Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park
A restored patch of native rocky desert beside the fort, with marked trails and a viewpoint. It gives a better sense of the original landscape than anything else in the city.
Time needed: 1 hour
4.The old blue city
The blue houses cluster around Brahmpuri, below the fort. Walk up from the Sardar Market side, stay on the main lanes and keep an eye out for viewpoints. Morning light is kinder than midday.
Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
5.Sardar Market and the clock tower
An old bazaar built around a clock tower, selling spices, textiles, silver and lacquer bangles. It is loud, crowded and worth an hour if you want to see everyday Jodhpur.
Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
6.Umaid Bhawan Palace
Completed in 1943 and still partly a royal residence, with a large section run as a luxury hotel. Non-guests can visit the museum wing, which has clocks, weapons and vintage cars; the hotel restaurants require a reservation.
Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
7.Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell
An 18th-century stepwell restored in recent years, now surrounded by small cafés and shops. Good for a break and for photographs of the geometric stone steps.
Time needed: 30 minutes
8.Mandore Gardens
About 9 km north of the centre, Mandore was the earlier capital of the Marwar rulers. The gardens hold red-sandstone cenotaphs of past rulers, and there is a small museum.
Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
9.Bishnoi village visit
Half-day jeep tours go to villages about 25 to 30 km outside the city where Bishnoi families make pottery and weave dhurries, and you can usually sit down for tea in a family home. The Bishnoi community is known for protecting wildlife, and blackbuck and chinkara are often seen from the road.
Time needed: 3 to 4 hours·Tip: Book through your hotel or a licensed operator, and ask what the price includes before you set off.
10.Zip-lining along the fort walls
A licensed operator runs ziplines across the fort ramparts and over the lake below. It is optional and suited to those who want a change from museums.
Time needed: About 2 hours

- Around Sardar Market and the clock tower
- Central and busy. Convenient for shopping and food, but noisy.
- Ratanada, Residency Road and Sardarpura
- Newer parts of the city with mid-range and business hotels, good restaurants and easy taxi access. A 10 to 15 minute ride from the fort.
- Umaid Bhawan Palace and heritage resorts
- A palace hotel and several large resorts, priced accordingly. Book well ahead for winter.
What to eat and buy in Jodhpur
- Mirchi bada and mawa kachori
- Mirchi bada is a large chilli stuffed with potato, fried in gram-flour batter; mawa kachori is a sweet pastry filled with reduced milk. Both are best eaten warm from a local shop.
- Makhaniya lassi
- A thick saffron and cardamom lassi with a layer of butter and cream, sold near the clock tower. Very rich; one glass is usually enough.
- Marwari thalis and laal maas
- Look for traditional vegetarian thalis with gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri and bajra rotis. Laal maas is the regional mutton curry.
- Spices
- Sardar Market and Nai Sarak have spice shops selling masalas in sealed packets. Try a small pack before buying a large one, and check the packaging date.
- Bandhej, mojari and lac bangles
- Tie-dyed textiles (bandhej), pointed leather shoes and lacquer bangles are all sold in the old town markets. Check stitching and dye colour before paying.

Practical tips
- Do the fort first thing in the morning and the old city later when it wakes up. Midday heat on the ramparts is fierce in the warmer months.
- The audio guide at Mehrangarh is one of the better ones in India. Give it the time.
- In the old city, agree the destination and the price before getting into an auto.
- Shop owners will invite you in for tea. It's fine to accept and not buy; be clear about that politely.
- If you plan to eat street food, choose busy places with fast turnover. Milk-based sweets need to be fresh.
- Carry a scarf or light cover-up for temples and cenotaphs.
