Georgia
Caucasus peaks, ancient wine and Tbilisi's balconies
Why go
Georgia has become one of the most talked-about trips out of India — visa-easy, great value, and startlingly beautiful. Base a few days in Tbilisi for the old town, the Narikala fortress and a bathhouse soak, with day trips to the ancient capital of Mtskheta and the vineyards of Kakheti. Then head north on the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Trinity Church sits alone on a green ridge with a 5,000 m peak behind it. Wine, khachapuri and a supra (feast) are non-negotiable.
Trip highlights
- Tbilisi old town, Narikala fortress and the sulphur baths
- Kazbegi and the Gergeti Trinity Church
- Mtskheta — Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
- A Kakheti wine day with a qvevri cellar visit
