Varanasi
The oldest living city, on the Ganga
Why go
Varanasi is not a relaxing trip and it isn't meant to be. It's a full-immersion encounter with faith, mortality and daily life all stacked on the same set of stone steps. Do it properly: a rowing boat at first light along the ghats, a walk through the impossibly narrow lanes of the old city with a guide who can explain what you're seeing, the Ganga aarti from the water at dusk, and a half day at the calm of Sarnath where Buddhism began. Two nights is enough; it's intense.
Trip highlights
- Sunrise boat ride along the ghats
- Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat
- Old-city heritage walk and a silk-weaving workshop
- Sarnath — the Dhamek Stupa and museum
