Pondicherry

French quarter, filter coffee and the sea wall

Why go

Pondicherry — Puducherry — is a pocket of France on the Coromandel Coast, and it makes a lovely two- or three-night slow-down. Stay in a restored heritage house in the French Quarter (White Town), where the streets are named 'Rue' this and 'Rue' that and the mornings smell of baking. Walk the sea-facing Promenade at dusk, cycle out to the experimental township of Auroville and its golden Matrimandir, and eat very well — Creole, Tamil and French all at once. Beaches at Paradise and Serenity are a short hop away.

Trip highlights

  • French Quarter (White Town) heritage walk
  • Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the Promenade at dusk
  • Auroville and the Matrimandir gardens
  • A day at Paradise or Serenity beach
