Manali
Pine valleys, snow lines and the Beas
Why go
Manali is the Himalayan trip most Indians take first, and for good reason — it's a comfortable overnight bus or a short flight to Kullu, the town has real infrastructure, and the scenery earns its keep. Base yourself in quieter Old Manali or a riverside resort, walk to the cedar-shaded Hadimba temple and the hot springs at Vashisht, and spend a day at Solang Valley for the ropeway and, in season, the snow. With more time, the drive over the Atal Tunnel opens up the stark Lahaul valley on the far side.
Trip highlights
- Hadimba Devi temple and Old Manali
- Solang Valley ropeway and snow point
- Vashisht hot springs and the Jogini waterfall walk
- Atal Tunnel to the Lahaul valley and Sissu
