Overview

A night on a houseboat through Kerala's backwaters is what most people picture when they think of a Kerala trip — a converted rice barge (kettuvallam) with a thatched roof, drifting along palm-lined canals and the open water of Vembanad Lake, with meals cooked on board and nothing to do but watch the shore go by. It's genuinely one of the most relaxing things you can do on an Indian holiday, and it's why almost every Kerala itinerary builds in at least one night for it.

It's also a very large industry. Alleppey alone has well over a thousand houseboats operating out of its backwaters, run by everyone from well-established, licensed operators to one-boat owners working through touts at the jetty. That spread is why the experience and the price can vary so much for what looks, in a photo, like the same boat.

This guide covers Alleppey vs Kumarakom, what the different boat categories actually mean, realistic prices by bedroom and category, a sense of how a day and night on board unfolds, and the specific checks that keep a booking from going wrong.

What's included — and what usually isn't

Typically included

  • The boat itself for a private group — houseboats are booked per boat, not per person, so the price covers everyone in your cabin(s)
  • A crew of two to three: a captain/navigator, a cook, and usually a helper
  • All meals cooked on board — typically lunch, evening tea and snacks, dinner and breakfast on an overnight package
  • Bottled drinking water
  • Use of the sun deck and, on most boats, fishing rods
  • Air conditioning in the bedroom, on Premium and Luxury boats — Deluxe boats usually run AC only overnight (roughly 9 pm to 6 am)

Usually extra

  • Alcohol — almost never provided; most boats are fine with you bringing your own
  • A longer or customised route beyond the operator's standard backwater loop
  • Entry fees for any stops that charge one, such as a bird sanctuary visit near Kumarakom
  • Transfers to and from the jetty, unless your package or travel designer has bundled them in
  • Daytime AC on Deluxe boats — check this specifically if you're travelling in the hotter months

Operators package this differently — always confirm the exact inclusions in writing before you pay.

Boat categories and what they cost

Priced per boat, per night — not per person. A group sharing a larger boat brings the per-person cost down a long way.

Deluxe (1 bedroom)About ₹6,000–10,000 per boat, per night

  • AC overnight only (roughly 9 pm–6 am)
  • Attached bathroom
  • Simple furnishing
  • Standard meal menu

Premium (1 bedroom)About ₹10,000–16,000 per boat, per night

  • Full-time AC in the bedroom
  • Better furnishing and linen
  • A larger sun deck
  • Slightly more varied menu, often with a non-veg option

Luxury (1 bedroom)About ₹16,000–25,000+ per boat, per night

  • Unlimited AC
  • Premium interiors, sometimes a glass-walled bedroom
  • Upgraded dining and a more flexible menu
  • Better-maintained, newer boats

Alleppey vs Kumarakom

Alleppey (Alappuzha)

About 1.5 hours by road from Kochi (Cochin) International Airport

The backwater capital — narrow village canals, the widest choice of boats and operators, and a lot of activity on the water in peak season. Routes mix tight canals with stretches of open Vembanad Lake.

Best for

  • · First-time visitors
  • · Budget-to-mid-range boats and the widest choice
  • · Cultural immersion — village life along the canals

Kumarakom

About 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Kochi International Airport (roughly 80 km)

Quieter and greener, with roughly a tenth as many houseboats as Alleppey, so the water is far less crowded. Routes lean towards open lake rather than narrow canals, and it's the base for Kumarakom's bird sanctuary.

Best for

  • · Couples and travellers who want fewer boats around them
  • · Birdwatching alongside the cruise
  • · A quieter, more premium-leaning experience

A typical day and night on board

12:00–1:00 pm

Boarding

Most boats board around noon. Check-in, a welcome drink, and a look around your cabin before departure.

1:00–2:00 pm

Lunch, underway

A Kerala meal served soon after you set off — rice, sambar, a vegetable dish or two, and often a fish curry.

2:00–5:00 pm

Cruising

The boat moves slowly through canals and out onto the open lake. This stretch is the point of the whole experience — there's genuinely nothing to do but watch the backwaters go by from the sun deck.

5:00 pm

Evening tea and snacks

Tea or coffee with a fried snack, usually served as the boat moors for the evening.

6:00–6:30 pm

Sunset over Vembanad Lake

Boats typically moor for the night by early evening rather than cruising after dark.

8:00–9:00 pm

Dinner

Cooked on board — rice or chapati, a curry, a vegetable side, often fish or chicken on non-veg menus.

Overnight

Moored for the night

The boat stays moored rather than cruising, usually in a quieter backwater stretch away from the main jetty traffic.

7:00–8:00 am

Breakfast

Appam and stew, or a simpler breakfast, depending on the boat.

9:00–10:00 am

Return cruise and disembarkation

A short cruise back to the jetty, with checkout usually by 10 or 10:30 am.

What to pack

  • Light, breathable clothing — the backwaters are warm and humid most of the year
  • A hat and sunscreen for time on the open sun deck
  • Mosquito repellent — the evenings by still water attract them
  • A light jacket if you're cruising in the cooler December–January evenings
  • Cash in small notes for tips to the crew and any stops along the way
  • Any medication you need — the nearest pharmacy may be a cruise away, not a walk away

Booking safely

Most houseboat complaints in Alleppey trace back to a handful of avoidable mistakes at booking time.

  • Book with a Kerala Tourism-certified operator. Certified boats carry a visible registration and classification; ask for the operator's name and registration number before you pay, not after.
  • Avoid booking from a tout who approaches you at the Alleppey jetty itself — boats filled this way are commonly the ones corners get cut on, since the tout's commission comes out of the operator's margin.
  • Pay a modest advance (roughly 20–40%) by UPI or bank transfer to a business account, not a personal number with no paper trail, and get a written confirmation with the boat name, category and cancellation terms.
  • Confirm in writing whether AC runs full-time or overnight-only on your category of boat — this is the detail most often misrepresented.
  • If your boat doesn't match what was confirmed when you arrive, raise it immediately with the operator rather than after the cruise.
  • Through Trippex, we book houseboats we've used ourselves or vetted directly — ask your travel designer for the boat's name before you pay.

Etiquette

  • Tip the crew directly at the end of the cruise — it's expected and makes up a meaningful part of their income.
  • Ask before swimming from the boat; water quality and depth vary a lot along the route.
  • Keep noise reasonable in the evening — other boats moor nearby, often within easy earshot.
  • Don't throw rubbish into the water; use the bins on board.
  • If you want a particular dietary adjustment, tell the cook at boarding rather than partway through the cruise.

Best time to go

November to February is the classic houseboat season — dry, cool and with the best birdlife. June to September, the monsoon, is quieter and cheaper, with its own appeal if you don't mind rain on the roof.

MonthsWeatherWhat it means for a cruise
Nov – FebDry, cool and clear, warm daysPeak season — the backwaters at their calmest and birdlife at its richest. Book boats ahead over the Christmas–New Year fortnight especially.
Mar – MayHot and humidFewer crowds and some discounting, but the heat makes the sun deck less comfortable by midday.
Jun – SepMonsoon, heavy at timesThe backwaters are at their greenest, with the lowest prices and fewest other boats around — but routes can be shortened in heavy rain.
OctMonsoon receding, greenery still fullA strong shoulder-season pick: lush scenery, lighter rain, and the peak-season crowds haven't arrived yet.

How to reach the backwaters

By air
Cochin International Airport (COK) is the gateway for both — about 1.5 hours by road to Alleppey, and about 1.5 to 2 hours (roughly 80 km) to Kumarakom.
By train
Alappuzha (Alleppey) has its own railway station with connections to Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and beyond. Kumarakom is usually reached by road from Kottayam or Kochi.
By road
Alleppey is about 60 km from Kochi city; Kumarakom is about 90 to 95 km. Both are common stops on a wider Kerala itinerary that also covers Kochi and Munnar.

A few more tips

  • A houseboat is priced per boat, not per person — a group of 4 to 6 sharing a 2- or 3-bedroom boat brings the per-person cost down a long way compared with a couple on a 1-bedroom boat.
  • One night is the standard and is enough to get the full experience; a second night mostly repeats the first without much new to see.
  • If you're short on time or don't want an overnight stay, the day cruise covers the same canals and lake in a single afternoon at a lower cost.
  • December to early January is the single busiest stretch — book your boat at least a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then.

FAQs

What is included in a Kerala houseboat package?

A standard overnight package includes the boat (private to your group), a crew of two to three (captain, cook, and usually a helper), all meals cooked on board, drinking water, and use of the sun deck. Alcohol, transfers to the jetty, and any sanctuary entry fees are usually separate — confirm exactly what's included before you pay.

Alleppey or Kumarakom — which is better for a houseboat?

Alleppey has far more boats and operators, narrower village canals, and generally lower prices — it's the better starting point for most first-time visitors. Kumarakom has a tenth as many boats, so the water is quieter, and it pairs naturally with birdwatching, but tends to cost more for a similar category of boat.

How much does a Kerala houseboat cost?

For a 1-bedroom boat, roughly ₹6,000–10,000 per night for a Deluxe (overnight-AC-only) boat, ₹10,000–16,000 for Premium (full-time AC), and ₹16,000–25,000 or more for Luxury. Prices are per boat, not per person, and 2- and 3-bedroom boats scale up from there.

Is one night on a houseboat enough?

Yes, for most travellers. A standard overnight package already covers a full day of cruising, a sunset, dinner and breakfast on board — the complete experience. A day cruise, without the overnight stay, is a shorter alternative if you're tight on time.

Does the AC run all day on a houseboat?

It depends on the category. Deluxe boats typically run AC only overnight (roughly 9 pm to 6 am); Premium and Luxury boats usually run it full-time in the bedroom. Confirm this specifically for your boat before booking if it matters to you, especially outside the cooler months.

How do I avoid a bad houseboat booking in Alleppey?

Book with a Kerala Tourism-certified operator rather than a tout who approaches you at the jetty, pay a partial advance to a traceable business account rather than a personal number, get the boat's name and category confirmed in writing, and check it matches what you paid for as soon as you board.

Is the monsoon a bad time for a houseboat cruise?

No — it's a different experience rather than a worse one. The backwaters are at their greenest, prices are lower and there are far fewer other boats around, though heavy rain can shorten a route on a given day. November to February remains the most reliable season for dry, clear cruising.

Can a houseboat be booked for a large family or group?

Yes. Boats come with two, three or four bedrooms, and the per-person cost drops significantly as you add bedrooms and split the total — it's one of the more cost-effective ways to do the backwaters as a group.
